OSAO offers a qualification unit in restaurant and catering services delivered completely in English. The Working in Catering Services qualification unit provides you with basic knowledge and skills for the restaurant and catering industry. You are interested in food preparation and customer service, and you aim to employ yourself through short-term studies. You can also use it to complement your previous education or if you are considering entering the restaurant and catering field.
Description of Studies
Target Group
These studies are aimed at individuals with an immigrant background who are interested in the field. The goal of the studies is to enable employment in the industry and provide a foundation for further education in the field.
Schedule
Note! The studies are set to begin in English on January 13, 2025, at the Kaukovainio unit, Services department. Application period is from September 15 to October 17, 2024.

Cost of studying
Tuition is free. During the studies, a hygiene proficiency certificate (hygieniapassi) will be completed, which costs €8. Additionally, students must acquire suitable work clothes and shoes for kitchen work.
Scope of Studies
The scope of The Working in Catering Services qualification unit is 20 competence points. You will be provided with a personalized competence development plan (HOKS), which recognizes your prior skills and determines the skills required to complete the qualification unit. This will define your exact study period.
This qualification unit is part of the Vocational qualification in Restaurant and Catering Services. The studies are delivered in a school environment, at the workplace, and through online learning. Competence is demonstrated by performing tasks in food preparation in the catering sector and is assessed on a scale of K5-T1 (excellent, good, satisfactory).
Learning Objectives
The goal of the studies is to enable employment and offer the opportunity to complete the compulsory qualification unit in the restaurant and catering sercives. It also aims to inspire students to pursue a qualification in the field.
Upon completing the Working in Catering Services qualification unit, you will have the basic knowledge and skills to:
- Prepare for your work shift
- Ensure the facilities are ready for use, prepare products for sale, and maintain them
- Serve customers, sell products, and register sales
- Complete the tasks of the work shift
- Assess your own skills and performance as a member of the work community.

- Self-monitoring and occupational safety
- Knowledge of raw materials

Selection criteria
Students are selected based on an interview.
Interview scoring (0-10) is weighted as follows:
- Previously acquired skills, up to 2 points
- Need for studies, up to 2 points
- Motivation, up to 6 points
